Designer Jan Digney looks back over the many prototypes she experimented with before settling on the current design.

Some people have told Designer Jan Digney her underpants look strange. She says that response is to be expected, "of course it looks strange because it is something different, but what it does provide is a comfort that you probably haven't experienced."

Ms Digney came up with the idea for a new style of underwear eighteen months ago. She is now negotiating international distribution deals and has the product patented in 123 countries.

The challenge, how to avoid the much maligned visible panty line or VPL?

The solution, design a new style of underpants and start a successful international business.

Ms Digney says she came up with the idea eighteen months ago when she had had enough of her underwear turning into outerwear.

"What got me out there was seeing that dreaded g-string look. The 'g' coming up or your underwear coming up above your clothes, actually spoils the whole reason of getting dressed up," Ms Digney said.

Not deterred by the fact she had no experience as a clothing designer and hated sewing lessons at school, Ms Digney set about designing something new.

"I got busy cutting and I basically stumbled across this little thing that was comfortable for myself, I showed my daughters and they wanted to try them."

"They came back and said mum we want some more, we love them."

"I showed my girlfriends, they had the same opinion. I thought to myself everyone is finding this particular brief is comfortable, it doesn't fall down, and it does what you want your brief to do."

The Backless Brief is now patented in 123 countries around the world.

"How many times have we thought of something and never followed it through and it's been out there a few years later and you go, I thought of that a long time ago."

Ms Digney is now negotiating international distribution deals while fielding a constant stream of enquiries.

"I have had a couple of people say, that looks weird, that looks strange, of course it looks weird, of course it looks strange because it is something different, but what it does provide is a comfort that you probably haven't experienced."
